What is the SPEED Task Force?
Established by Act 133 (2025), the Simplifying Permitting for Enhanced Economic Development (SPEED) Task Force is a 34-member interagency group focused on overhauling the state's notoriously slow permitting system.  Its primary mission is to identify legislative and administrative measures that can expedite and coordinate permit processes across state and county agencies to support housing, infrastructure, and economic development.

The SPEED Task Force’s focus areas include:
  • Building permits
  • Historic preservation
  • Individual wastewater systems
  • Building codes
  • State land district boundary amendments
  • Wells and water permits
  • Affordable housing programs
  • Sign permits

A report of the SPEED Task Force’s findings and recommendations is expected to be complete in December 2026 or January 2027. These findings and recommendations will be presented at the SPEED Summit.
